Downed Cyclist, Letter to Nashville Cycling Community

Dear Nashville Cycling Community:

Nathan Wahlman was involved in a very serious accident on July 11th when a motorist, turning left into Centennial Park from West End, turned directly into him.  He was taken to Vanderbilt hospital to be treated for a broken leg, broken clavicle, 7 broken ribs, and a cracked chest bone.

The driver stated that he “did not see” Nathan. Both lights were green.

As a local cyclist, Nathan has spent the better part of the last decade car-free, regularly cycling >500 miles per week.  He has worked as a courier with Green Fleet for the past two years, delivering thousands of packages without incident throughout Nashville.

His dedication to bicycles is hard to quantify - just count his friends, his clients, and even the strangers that stop to inquire, “Is this your bike? Can you really bike in Nashville?  Do you really ride in this heat? Do you really ride in this cold?"

Nathan’s answer always, “Yes.”

More than anyone, he is the face of cycling in Nashville, the only person with a standing discount at every Davidson County bicycle shop.

To support Nathan, The Nashville Bicycle Alliance has set up a page (below) where you can make a contribution and send a note of encouragement.  We will also be having a benefit for Nathan at the Hub on August 9th at 7PM.  I know that any amount of support will mean a lot to Nathan as he begins a long recovery.

Nathan, we miss you, and we want you back on your bike soon.

Ride on!
